The Well of Grief

Those who will not slip beneaththe still surface on the well of grief,

turning down through its black waterto the place we cannot breathe,

will never know the source from which we drink, the secret water, cold and clear,

nor find in the darkness glimmering,

the small round coins, thrown by those who wished for something else.

When I was asked  to ponder a watchword for 2025, without too much reflection the word forbearance came to mind.  For reasons that might be obvious to you, dear reader, it is going to be a year filled with challenges.  Each of us will confront both personal and existential trials, like it or not. During moments of deep personal despair, I have found the above poem both comforting and inspiring, as well as poetically gorgeous.

During my daily walks outside, wherever I happen to be, I discover sights and sounds that excite, inspire and delight me. I invite you to do the same, wherever your day may take you.

Especially in times of forbearance, nourishing ourselves by bringing such enchantment to our eyes is both a gift to ourselves as well as to our community.
