“Have you ever felt the need to write your story and share it with others? What if you believed breaking the silence would heal you, but family members want you to keep certain stories private? Could you find a way to respect their wishes while honoring your truth?”

On July 11, I had the opportunity and privilege of being the guest on one of Lisa Cooper Ellison’s “Summer Shorts” podcast episode. If you’re not familiar with her, here’s a link to Lisa’s podcast and background.

Our conversation was rich, friendly and informative; Lisa helped frame my conundrum in a context that offered new perspectives and possibilities. For instance, her comment–– Maybe they’re not your readers, in reference to close family members, was both thought-provoking and surprising. Lisa offered concrete steps for exploring who might be the best audience for my memoir once I reach that point. Currently, I’m struggling with the second draft’s “messy middle”–as Lisa aptly describes this stage. Word by word, sentence by sentence, I hope to reach that goal.

Here’s a link to this episode in case you’d like to watch it.
